If you're providing the end user with the ability to save a document out to PDF, a print driver is a fine way to provide the capability.
Adobe offers one; I expect there are less expensive print drivers out there.
The basic "how-to" for it is pretty simple: install the print driver, follow its instructions how to specify the output file. Done.
The trouble comes if you're exporting docs in-bulk, or programmatically. Then you have to figure out how to tell the print driver what it needs to know, watch the print driver as a separate process (because when you're done "sending to the printer (driver)" -- it's not done printing to the file), and where to move the file once you've verified, it's printed out.
